FRIT TAM: CHINESE ADVENTURE FILM MAKER

I had the pleasure of talking to Frit Tam, a Chinese adventurer, adventure filmmaker, photographer and a member of the LGTBQ community.

FrIT told me about growing up in Britain and how despite having family heritage in Hong Kong, the family here is very Westernised.

It was during university that Frit started to learn how to use a camera better, at the same time as studying Visual Effects and Animation, with a view to working in cinema. But that dream of working in cinema animation changed with the realisation that film making enabled Frit to be able to use cameras to develop a structure with a profound narrative to tell compelling stories.

BRAVE ENOUGH, was Frit's first hour long film, that followed Jo Moseley@healthyhappy50 ,the Stand up Paddleboarder, who had an adventure paddleboarding along the Leeds Liverpool canal. They have had so many sellout screenings of the film, with question and answer sessions. The film beautifully captured the emotional rollercoaster of embarking on a personal challenge, both mentally and physically. As well as picking up litter for environmental charities.

Frit talked about telling both parents about being gay, they took it well, which made life so much easier. . The response was very positive.

Frit is now embarking on a personal adventure GLIDE FOR PRIDE, on rollerblades on 15th May (Covid permitting ), visiting LGBTBQ communities, historical sites of importance, charities and significant people. Sharing stories of the LGTBplusQ people throughout history, until the present day. Dispelling myths about someone being "the only gay in the village" showing in fact that there are so many LGBTQ communities up and down the country, so we need to hear about them more. The Glide for pride adventure is to stop people in those communities feeling that they are the only people going through those experiences and to make the media reflect the true stories behind everyone and not to dehumanise members of the LGTBQ community. Frit feels that the media coverage makes it difficult for individuals to reach out when they are grappling with sexual orientation or gender identity, it can actually make their lives so much harder. Frit wants to show there is a huge community of people who are welcoming and more than ready to help you.

Frit did admit to buying lots of padding to wear on the rollerblades because there are lots of falls getting to grips with the moves and stopping on the blades during her training sessions. hopefully things will improve greatly before the start of Glide for Pride.
