WHY YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO HAVE THOSE ADVENTURES

Image
I ended my last blog by saying that I was glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone while I was able to physically do so. It was with that in mind that I agreed to go wild river swimming with the farm owners's daughter, Rose.  She took me to an area of the River Stour she knew well. She had spent many summers growing up swimming in that part of the river and jumping in from a bridge that spanned it. We had such an exhilarating time jumping in from the bridge (having checked and checked again, that it was safe to do so, no strong currents, no debris and it was very deep.) I have to admit to feeling very nervous but I wanted to push myself to overcome my fear and to say yes more and I am so glad that I did. It took me back to my childhood days when we would go to Wales on holiday and swim in the local rivers, even when they were freezing cold. We had hours of fun building dams across those rivers. Now Rose had encouraged me to feel free and to enjoy the moment and I am so thankful ...

DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THE RETIREMENT REBELLION?

Image
This week I featured in the Sunday Telegraph Newspaper in an article about the retirement rebellion and it has generated a lot of interest in what I am doing. Which is travelling around Great Britain in a motorhome championing positive ageing and challenging ageist stereotypes. I have also got several invitations to speak about my experiences and my positive ageing campaign. This is good news for me because when I started my adventures just under two years ago I was not totally sure how I would get my message across; that it is good to age and we should be doing it positively, retirement should not mean that we are put out to grass. For me retirement is a chance to become the person that I always knew I was. I have the freedom to do what I want when I want, to be kind to others and to try to inspire others to live life to the fullest no matter how long they have on this earth. I want people to listen to that voice urging them to have an adventure, no matter how big or small, we on...

POSITIVE AGEING LED ME IN MY 60's TO VOLUNTEER TO WORK ON A FARM

Image
Where are you going? What will you be doing? and who are you going to meet there? These were the questions my daughter was firing at me down the phone as I prepared for my next Motorhome adventure. I had found a site on Facebook that advertised work experiences in exchange for somewhere to park my motorhome and hook up to electric. I had replied to one where they wanted someone to work for three hours a day, five days a week, on a farm in Dorset. But that was pretty much all I knew. I did not really know where it was, or what I would be doing but I did know it made me feel excited and alive at the prospect of pushing myself outside of my usual comfort zone and doing something completely different.  I assured my daughter that I would pin drop my location on WhatsApp as soon as I arrived so that would allay her fears that I was going to end up somewhere in the back of beyond. I had already had all kinds of jokes from my friends in Folkestone, who I stayed with for a couple of ...

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU .......... "STUFF" OR "FAMILY AND FRIENDS"?

Image
When I decided that I wanted to hit the road in my motorhome and travel around Great Britain nearly two years ago, the important thing for me was to send out a positive ageing message and to challenge ageist stereotypes. I am heartened that in the last two years, particularly throughout both lockdowns, I have seen a momentum growing of people advocating the proageing message. We all age from the day we are born. We are privileged to be able to age, I have lost family members far too early in their lives and that makes me even more determined to embrace life and live every day to its fullest. The pandemic stopped me in my tracks during the lockdowns, and I have to admit that at times it was very hard psychologically to know how to cope with the restrictions imposed on me. The main thing I said when I set off was "my plan is to have no plan. I intend to go with the flow and see where life takes me" The Pandemic gave me time to really reflect on things and to regroup and prior...
